Does your Rental Property Meet Health Requirements?
If you haven’t heard the controversy yet about the hazards of mold in the home, you probably should start looking into it if you suspect there could be a problem in your rental property. Recent legislation requires that a mold disclosure be given to buyers in all real estate sales transactions. We have known for years that mold is not a good thing. Mold is even mentioned thousands of years ago in the Bible as something potentially hazardous or dangerous to our health.
Most of us take obvious measures to remove mold when it is discovered. We know that mold is a living organism that can go airborne and be breathed into our body. The most frustrating thing about the “mold issue”, though, is that sometimes you can’t see it. From what I’ve read on the subject, it seems that after a patch of mold reaches a span of 2 square feet, it poses a significant health threat. Sometimes the mold is hiding under floorboards or behind walls. If you smell something you suspect might be mold, I encourage you to investigate a little further. While I am sure all of you are concerned as I am in providing a safe environment for tenants, you don’t want a situation to escalate and end up in the court system where the only winners are the attorneys!
